Why I altered the “If you are looking for a sign” post:
Cognitive bias is the way that your mood and mindset alter how you process stimuli. If you’re happy, you process happy, comfortable things faster. If you’re angry, you find aggression everywhere. And if you’re depressed, everything you see is telling you to be alive as you are is the worst fate in the world.
So this popular post that I have seen many times concerns me:
Because of cognitive bias, when I look at this post, what jumps out at me, even though I’ve seen it before, even though I read the whole sentence, is the bottom left: “kill yourself tonight.” It is set apart from the rest of the sentence by a line break and the emphasis, and as a result, it shouts the exact opposite of the intended message.
I can’t be the only person who feels this way upon seeing this post. This post is intended to dissuade a depressed person from hurting themselves, but I have such fear that it will unintentionally do the opposite, just because of design.
